Watercolor Supplies to begin with.

I have attended watercolor workshops with people who bring in a literal trunk of paints, papers, brushes, etc. First let me say, when starting in watercolor, LESS is definitely more.

If you want a quick start with a nice student grade watercolor that does the trick, try Cotman’s Watercolor Travel Set

It’s a nice starter set that allows you to start painting immediately without much thought. It contains 12 colors-Lemon Yellow Hue, Cadmium Yellow Hue, Cadmium Red Pale Hue, Alizarin Crimson hue, Ultramarine, Intense Blue (Phthalo Blue), Viridian Hue, Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Chinese White. One nice thing about this is that you can buy individual half pans of paint to replace colors you don’t use, change brands, etc.

LIMITED PALETTE

I recommend a limited palette when starting out in watercolor so that you have only a few colors to get familiar with which can be combined to create numerous colors for your paintings. I personally prefer tubes of paint, but if you prefer pans, you can buy them in that form as well.

Here are the paints I recommend to begin. As you get familiar with each one, add another. I use professional watercolors Winsor Newton, Daniel Smith, QOR, American Journey, Holbein and Sennelier. For this list, I am choosing the least expensive brand at this time for the pigment I want. These are from Amazon, I get a commission from them. You might also try Jerry’s Artarama for good deals

The main thing to remember is that you can do this over time, you can start with whatever you have and grow from there. Don’t feel like you have to buy all the things at once just to start painting. Just start. And as you acquire your supplies, your paintings will improve, promise!

Im so excited for your creative journey!
